Although the conflict between Serbs and Albanians that plagued the country throughout the 1990s officially ended in 1999, the economic picture remains bleak in Kosovo, also known as Kosova. The conflict left about 10,000 dead and 1 million displaced from their homes. Women make up approximately 70 percent of the population, and the general unemployment rate is close to 50 percent overall and 80 percent for women. Healing from trauma and rebuilding the country are ongoing challenges faced by Kosovar women.
