As in many of today’s wars, those affected by the conflict in the Middle East are overwhelmingly civilian women and children:

     • 1,100 Lebanese civilians were killed.  3,800 Lebanese were

        wounded, mainly women and children.  More than 200,000 people

        remain displaced from their homes. 

     • Of the 116 Israelis killed, 43 were civilians.  2700 Israelis were   

         wounded.

     • Of the 158 Palestinians killed, the vast majority were

        civilians, including 32 children, and 543 Palestinians were

        wounded.

Civilian infrastructure, including bridges and roads, were targeted in the attacks making it nearly impossible for civilians to seek safety.  The conflict decimated physical and social infrastructures, destabilized economies and destroyed homes and families. 

Women in Lebanon face enormous challenges in the aftermath of war. The United Nations reports that it will cost over $4 billion to repair the country's infrastructure, setting the country back 15 years in terms of development. 16,000 homes have been damaged. Up to 1 million cluster bombs still lie unexploded in areas where families will return to rebuild their homes.
