Nicholas Kristof Leads Luncheon Discussion For Women for Women International - New York, June 3, 2009.
Washington DC - Women for Women International’s New York Leadership Circle will spearhead public diplomacy and support for women survivors of wars and other conflicts on June 3, 2009 with an in-depth panel discussion of the unique challenges and opportunities that the global economic crisis presents to women affected by conflict, including clear examples of how improving the life of women in post conflict countries helps to secure and stabilize communities with far reaching benefits. The panel of experts will be moderated by New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Nicholas D. Kristof.
Luncheon chairs include Anne H. Bass, Lois Chiles, Abigail Disney, Jane Fonda, Anjelica Huston, Caroline Kennedy, Sandra Meyer, Mercedes Ruehl, and Lesley Stahl.
Women for Women International invests in women living in vulnerable communities in countries devastated by war, poverty and terrorism, including Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Congo. Women for Women International programs have helped more than 150,000 women to transition from victims to survivors to active citizens. This has been done by providing these women with direct aid and psychosocial support, job-skills training, small business assistance, leadership education, a commercial integrated farming initiative, and other programs.
The panel luncheon will be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 583 Park Avenue (at 63rd Street), New York City. The VIP Reception will begin at 11:30 a.m., and the luncheon program conducted from noon until 2 p.m.
We invite all to participate in this important effort to galvanize global support for women survivors of war and empower these women to re-knit the social fabric of their lives and communities, recover and realize their economic potential and contribute to just and peaceful societies.
As the worldwide economic climate remains bleak, the women we serve remain our top priority. The women served by Women for Women have suffered the atrocities of war, including profound poverty, brutal rapes, and at times bearing witness to their own families' executions. Clearly, their needs are critical, and the programs provided by Women for Women International offer hope–and possibilities for a better life.
