Entrepreneurship
Playing a leading role in economic development.
While starting a business of their own may have certain risks for women survivors of war and conflict, it also has enormous benefits.
Many women who run successful businesses can provide employment opportunities for both women and men in their local communities. It is also a chance for women to take a leading role in the economic development of their community.
Prior to beginning business training, Women for Women International (WfWI) program participants select a market-based job-skills track so their course work can be applied to meet a market need. Women learn basic numeracy skills before entering the program, ensuring they are well-prepared to start successfully. Six topics are covered by specialized trainers, preparing women to launch their own businesses:
- Business Basics: Women learn about the market economy focusing on small business.
- Entrepreneurship: The practice of entrepreneurship is discussed, in addition to the concepts of initiative, risk and judgment.
- Planning Ahead: All aspects of operating a small business are covered.
- Selling: Customer behavior and developing skills to increase customer traffic.
- Bookkeeping: Emphasis is placed on tracking expenses and income.
- Financing Your Business: Topics include credit as a tool for small business and the importance of repaying loans.
