Letters from Sponsors

From a sponsor to her sister in Nigeria

Very much hope this letter reaches you. Two days before Christmas, we received two letters from you; one dated 19 September and one dated 1 October. We were VERY relieved to learn that you were delivered of a healthy baby and so happy that you had your prayers answered and got the male child you had hoped for. I can’t find adequate words to tell you, Atong, how honored we are to have had you give your baby our name. We are so touched by this, as were our children when they heard the news. I cried, with happiness!

It was made clear to me, from the beginning, that I would likely be asked to transfer sponsorship to another woman at some point in time. As mentioned briefly in my last note, Atong, (which I hope you received) I’m so happy that you’re doing well and have learned so much from the program. But, I’m having a hard time giving up corresponding with you. Our relationship means a great deal to me. I must focus on the fact that you’re moving ahead and that you have good health and a wonderful family. If not for Women for Women International, I’d never have experienced the joy of knowing you. I’ll ask if there is some way I can continue to write to you. Please know that you have a friend in the United States and that the Adams Family in Washington is so very proud to have a namesake in Nigeria.

We send our love to you and to your family, and a special hug to Baby Adams.

Wishing you all good things,
Linda

Dear Leyla,

was so happy to get your wonderful letter. I feel that we already have a strong bond of friendship that will grow by mail while you are in the program. And after you finish, we can save our letters and pictures. That way, our memories will continue our friendship in spite of the miles between us. Thank you for all the news about your family. The warmth with which you write makes me feel close to you already. I am so glad that Women for Women has opened up your life. You say that you are entering school to become a teacher. You now have a goal – to become a teacher and to help a new generation learn cooperation and peace. That is so wonderful and I wish you success and happiness. You and I are much alike. I also went back to school (many years ago) so that I could teach and help students make a better world – a happier world. Many of them have jobs that allow them to help others, and I have always been glad that I became a teacher. My husband taught school also.

Now I am 77 years old, so I do not have a job. But I am still strong and healthy. Like you, I want to help peace grow in the world. Whatever our country, we all need peace and understanding. Women for Women helps you and me do our part for a better world. While you are in the program, I will write you early each month. The mail delivery is uneven however – either slow or fast. But each letter will come. I worry about the safety of you and your family, so I will also pray to my God for all of you. Please give my greetings to your husband, your sons, and especially your daughter (Asmci’a). How old is she and what are her interests?

Much love,
Catherine
