Since 1908, International Women’s Day has been a day to recognize the achievements of women around the world regardless of nationality, ethnic background, culture, economic status or political beliefs.
In Baghdad, women have rallied at the capitol for equal treatment… In Afghanistan you'll find women praying, holding poetry readings and demonstrating martial arts to show empowerment. In the DR Congo women have held parades and protests against unpunished sexual assaults… In Kosovo the women are treated to flowers and free food. And here in the US, people across the country hosted a variety of events in honor of International Womens Day.
We want to thank you for helping us celebrate International Women’s Day this past March 8th!
On the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day, our supporters told their communities about the challenges women in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda and Sudan are facing and how they are using their guts and grace to change their lives from victim to survivor to active citizen. From joining in local runs, making donations to Women for Women International, or joining us on a conference call with Zainab Salbi, founder of Women for Women International; we saw an overwhelming response, and are truly moved by your support.
A BIG Thank You for your support!
We are very proud of the women in our community, and to everyone who hosted events, spread the word, and honored women around the world on International Women’s Day! We deeply appreciate your commitment to women survivors of war. |
We especially want to thank those who participated in all of the Run for Congo Women events, or who joined Zainab Salbi, founder of Women for Women International and U.S. Executive Director Rania Atalla, on an inspiring conference call where they heard and asked questions about the women they're helping.

Didn't have time to host an event, or participate in a run? Don't worry, you can still celebrate women by making a donation to Women for Women International, towards these courageous, hopeful women who so desperately need your help.
Or experience the one-to-one connection of sponsoring a woman. This amazing experience links you with a sister from a war-torn country. Your financial support will help her feed her family, send her children to school, receive critical rights awareness training, and even start her own business. Even better, you'll correspond with her providing much needed emotional support.
No matter how you chose to mark International Women's day, we apreciate your support and look forward to another amazing celebration next year.
Don't miss being a part of this amazing celebration!

The Story of International Women's Day
-
The first International Women's Day was observed on February
28th, 1909 in the United States. It started due to unjust working
conditions during the industrial boom at the turn of the 20th Century.
Women from local textile and clothing factories staged a protest which
established the first Women's Labor Union.
-
Protests on March 8th then followed in years to come to fight
for better working conditions and rights.
-
In 1910 the first international women's conference was held in
Copenhagen and 'International Women's Day' was established.
-
The next year, International Women's Day was celebrated and
recognized by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and
Switzerland. It continued to be celebrated by Women across Europe,
however dwindled in the West until the feminist movement in the 1960s.
-
Women in countries across the globe now celebrate not only their
own hard work, but that of their mothers, sisters, friends, children,
etc; by giving small gifts of appreciation, holding ceremonies, events,
and celebrating the struggle women have, and are, going through to
obtain freedom, rights, and recognition in their communities.
